May 3, 2017

For the ones that were not able to read the review in the Critic's Choice. Maddox Arts new show "An Open Mind" is in the FT Weekend from the 29 of April. We are please to make it available in this news post.

First of all, the exhibition is selection of works by fifteen pioneering artists. Fifteen extraordinary personalities who contributed to the Geometric Abstraction, Optical and especially Kinetic Art movements.

Almost 60 years ago in Paris, the gallery Denise René presented the exhibition "Le Mouvement" (1955). That fostered the establishment of these trends in the art world of the time. Most of the artists presented in the exhibition starts careers in Denise René gallery. Denise René was the most important figure in the promotion of Abstract Art, as in many manifestations.  In addition, “An Open Mind” reflects on the avant-garde thinking of this risk taking gallery owner, who fought a constant battle to impose them as major global artistic trends. Furthermore, " (...) what can one say was the lifetime achievement of this Parisian gallery owner, so little known in Great Britain? One only has to go through the list of exhibitions in the current Galerie Denise René website to grasp that her entrepreneurship was so swift and successful because she knew the art, she understood the artists and she had a very good sense of what the patrons wanted. Her moves could have been inscribed as golden rules in a manual to aspiring gallerists of the period." - Gloria Carnevali, Former Director of Jesús Soto Museum of Modern Art, Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela The includes works by: Yaacov Agam, Olle Baertling, Martha Boto, Geneviève Claisse, Carlos Cruz-Diez and Sonia Delaunay. Also Cicero Dias, André Gaston Heurtaux, Alberto Magnelli, François Morellet, Francisco Sobrino, Jesús Rafael Soto, Henryk Stażewski, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Gregorio Vardanega and Victor Vasarely.
