‘An Open Mind’ essay by Gloria Carnevali

Maddox Arts, in collaboration with Galerie Denise René, is proud to present the

exhibition “An Open Mind”, a selection of works by fifteen pioneering artists who

contributed to the Geometric Abstraction, Optical and Kinetic Art movements.

More than 60 years ago in the city of Paris, the gallery Denise René presented the

exhibition “Le Mouvement” (1955). that fostered the establishment of these trends

in the art world of the time. Most of the artists presented in the exhibition “An

Open Mind” were showcased in this gallery early on in their careers.

Denise René, who passed away in 2012, was the most important figure in the

promotion of Abstract Art in its many manifestations. “An Open

Mind” reflects on the avant-garde thinking of this risk taking gallery owner,

who fought a constant battle to impose them as major global artistic trends.

The show will include works by: Yaacov Agam, Olle Baertling, Martha Boto,

Geneviève Claisse, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Sonia Delaunay, Cicero Dias, André Gaston

Heurtaux, Alberto Magnelli, François Morellet, Francisco Sobrino, Jesús Rafael

Soto, Henryk Stażewski, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Gregorio Vardanega and Victor

Vasarely.
